Yukon Wildlife Preserve

Love Yukoners' Days. That means free admission and a free tour of the Wildlife Preserve. It is fun to see the animals in their natural settings and to learn interesting animal facts as narrated by the bus driver. Of course, the bus tour is shortened, but still lasts almost an hour.

There were two lambs (one pictured above). What is cuter than a lamb? They are afraid to be left alone so in the enclosure were two volunteers who stayed with the wee ones.

There was also baby bison. Love the little ones.

The first animals we saw were elk - the first nation name is wapiti which apparently means white rump. This is how you can tell it is an elk.

And who did we meet here but my old neighbours, Helen and Ev (with David). It was fun to join them for a tour of the preserve as well as the new research facility on the property.

Kristin got to sit with some preserve relics.

Bean North

Where else would you see a weather vane like that above?

Saturday was an active day for us. We were a little early for Yukoners' Day at the Wildlife Preserve, so we stopped off at Bean North for a fine cup of java, certified organic and certified fairly traded coffee. In fact we had a new arrival, Honduran Coffee ... very very good.

With the cool weather we have been having lately, it was nice that the sun poked out enough for us to enjoy our mid morning snack outside.

A Day of Art

A day of Arts for us.
Visited Yukon Artists at Work, a co-op of local artists displaying and selling their crafts.

Then up to the Yukon Arts Centre Gallery to see the new exhibit 50 Women Over 50, which was superb. It is a remarkable exhibit which has been made into a book: http://www.yukonwomen.com/

Wandered the grounds a bit. Below Kristin is standing by one of my favourite reverse sculptures.

The Art Gallery setting gives you a great view of the city.

Thursday's Arts in the Park

Once again, saw some local talent in the park. Also saw Michele and Sue, two people I used to work with, so sat and had a good chat with them while listening to the fiddle music. Just too bad the weather wasn't a bit warmer and sunnier. Oh well, at least it didn't rain!

Joe Loutchan

Arts in the Park today featured Yukon's favourite fiddler, Joe Loutchan. Love that fiddle music!

An Eagle Story

Yesterday, one eagle was seen flying with a fish in his/her mouth. A second eagle was seen either playing with the first, or trying to get the fish from the first eagle. They flew around and around doing this dance in the air, whether playing or fighting, the person that was watching them could not discern. All of a sudden a loud electrical noise was heard. One of the eagles had flown into live electrical wires and was zapped to death. Very sad to lose such a majestic bird.

Two eagles mate beside the Yukon River. Kristin and I went to see them today. It is not known if the dead bird is one of the family at this site, but when we were there, a lone eagle sat on a pole looking very sad and crying out at intervals, as if calling to or lamenting its mate.

You can hear to sad story from a CBC radio interview: Click Here

Still Summer Weather

Arts in the Park began last week. Another season of music and art in the outdoors. On a day like today it is hard to resist. So Kristin and I purchased our sandwiches and made our way to LePage Park for some entertainment. Today it was the children at Holy Family School providing the music. The young ones were so cute. Reminded me of the days SR would sing in his Christmas pageants. Was hoping for some of our adult musical talent to show (off) to Kristin, but this was fun too.

Kristin now has one interview under her belt. We are just waiting to hear if there is a position. She is sending a resume around town, so hopefully something lucrative will evolve. In the mean time, we wandered downtown today then went to the pub for dinner and to watch Vancouver win the first game - YEAH YVR!! Perhaps Friday is a day trip to Skagway. But, of course, jobs come first.

Here we were enjoying a morning coffee beside the Yukon River.

It's Summer

You haven't seen me for a while. IT'S SUMMER. I am taking full advantage of the warm weather while it lasts. And now taking advantage of the daylight hours. Sun still shines at 10PM. Love it, love it, love it.

My niece arrived today from Ontario via YVR. Welcome to the Yukon (again) Kristin! So, had a dinner so she could meet the locals, ie SR & Brooke (and Lily). She came looking for work and has a wee job tomorrow, so prospects are looking good. Hopefully long-range work will soon develop and she will make bundles of money to put herself through another year of university.

And Will, I know it was a long time since you gave me the pirate plate for Christmas but I was sure you would have remembered it. Here is a photo of the plate (which I used to serve the bread on tonight by the way) and you also gave me pirate gloves (which I still wear in the winter). I just love that Jack Sparrow and can't wait to see the new movie!

My view from the kitchen this morning ... the date is M A Y 11th!
I have just spent 5 days in the yard spring cleaning. Painted my deck and wee porch. Raked. Cut down dead fall. Bagged 11 extra large compost bags and had them removed yesterday. Filled up the propane bottle so I could always be assured of a barbque flame. Ready to plant vegetable seeds in the garden. Ready for my first day on the links on Thursday. All ready for summer, then I awake to this.
I did worry that those geese I heard honking while flying in their 'V' formation overhead while I was spring cleaning would think that fall had arrived and turn around and head south again. I hope this is short lived.
Forgot to show you how special my special gift is.

In case you couldn't see it, I have enlarged the 'special' part ...

Birthday continued

Arrived home to two more wonderful gifts ... landmark birthdays are the best. Not only because I am still alive to experience them -- something that never ceases to amaze me considering how I lived parts of my life -- but now I get more and more discounts wherever I go. Love those senior deals.

The first gift I received on arrival (literally) was my new iPad2 ... I always loved (and still do) my little iPod Touch, which I carry around everywhere I go. Now I have a larger version of that which can do more than my little iPod. Another learning curve for me - apparently good for my ol' brain and I love it, love it, love it.

This iPad comes complete with a multi-use cover. It not only covers the screen, puts the iPad to sleep when closed and automatically wakens it when open, but folds back into two difference iPad stands. And it is pretty in pink too.

My 2nd gift I picked up in the mail the next day. A gift certificate to a local spa. Oh, how I need to be pampered. So, decided that as it is spring, and I have at least a good week's work (or two) cleaning up the yard and rock garden and planting my garden, I will certainly be ready for my manicure and why not throw in a pedicure and possibly a facial. They will have their work cut out for them after I complete all that outside work. Can't wait.

Apartment for Sale

Apartment for sale in Edmonton. Close to downtown, easy access to University of Alberta and Grant McEwan College, two bedrooms, 2 full baths... and and and ... this is what I have been doing here and hopefully the fruits of my labour will soon pay off. Funny, I really like this apartment and will be a bit sorry when it sells, but I do want to sell it so it will soon be advertised on MLS. If you want to purchase it, let me know!

Kinsman Centre

Drove down the hill to the Kinsman's Sports Facility (don't know the exact name) to watch Dawson practice his ball. Usually it takes me a bit more than 10 minutes to make the drive. Last night, during rush hour, it took ONE HOUR!! Guess all the traffic driving over a two lane bridge creates a bottle-neck at that time of day.

The practice was INSIDE which surprised me, but when I saw them I thought it was a wonderful idea. The balls are hit and thrown against thick curtains, so they don't go very far and one can hit or pitch a lot of balls in a little time.

I did see Dawson practice batting and pitching, even though I was one half hour late.

His dad is assistant coach. Here are the two of them after practice.

Then went home and although I don't follow hockey, did flick on the TV and the games were on so watched Montreal v Boston. We all know how that turned out.

Edmonton

My morning spot - Second Cup. Not only do I like their coffee, but the internet works wonderfully and I can sit and sip and check my mail etc. The weather here is wonderful, very warm sunny spring days with crisp evenings. Perfect.

It didn't matter where SR lived when he was in Edmonton, he always saw the Molson's clock. Unfortunately, although I can see it from where I live, it is no longer lighting up the sky with the time. The building itself is in major disrepair. Does that mean Molson's beer is not doing so well? I don't know.
And no trip to Edmonton would be complete without a stop at my favourite shop - dots. I have that planned for later this week and will see what kind of bargains I can find.

Apartment cleaning/organizing is almost complete. I worked very very hard for a couple of days and am now reaping the rewards of my work.

Must check my emails now while I still have access to the web ...

Easter Sunday

It's Easter Sunday and here I sit in my fave coffee spot - Second Cup, sipping my java and taking advantage of their WiFi. Celebrated my b'day yesterday with Jenn, Brent & Dawson in the midst of my messy messy apartment. Missed my real b'day with a migraine but better late than never and they did bring my favourite food - birthday cake.
Had a busy day in organizing the apartment for sale. Now have the kitchen, living room and dining room ready for show. Just the bedrooms and bathrooms to go. When I finish, I do plan to shop a bit as I missed my specially planned shopping day - April 22nd.

I am excited to get home as well as I will have a couple of gifts awaiting me -- I am very anxious to see (and play with) them. But you know what they say about patience.

Happy Easter to all! Hope the Easter Bunny found you.

It's That Weekend Again

Another year has passed and the the Whitehorse Rapids Old Timers International Soccer Tournament (I believe I got that name right!!) was this weekend. Once again, I was asked if I would take some pictures and I did.
Luckily Juneau made it this year for two reasons. One, we like the team to participate and Two, they make it "international". When they arrived at the ferry dock on Friday morning, they found the ferry was cancelled. That put a wrench in the works. They finally chartered two small planes to fly them to Skagway, where they rented a van to Whitehorse. We are so glad they made it. All in all there were six teams including one co-ed team. Some very good soccer was played.

And the winner is ... (drum roll please) ...

Hands Free

I always wondered why they haven't made a hands-free faucet, especially for the kitchen. When I saw this commercial I had to have one, so now I do. I LOVE IT!!!!

Jesse

As you may know I am thinking of getting a dog perhaps this year. I want one like Jesse!

A New Post

Just had a complaint that the same photo is showing every time they pull up my blog. I know. I have been busy and unable to update and, as well, it is a slow time of year. So you won't have to view the same photo over and over, I will share with you the following, submitted to me by my 'ol bud MJT. It is fascinating and well worth a watch.

Brooke's parent's neighbour was in town, all the way from YVR. Tom came up on a familiarization tour of the Yukon, spending the weekend in Dawson City (Diamond Tooth Gerty's), in the mountains skidoo-ing, dogsledding at Fish Lake ... you know (esp you people from Ancaster) how much you can fit into a very short period of time in the north. And it ended with a bar-b-qued elk dinner on Sunday evening at SR & Brooke's house. Another excellent meal in the north.

Although Lily looks large in the photo above, she is not. Brooke is small. But I liked this photo as Lily was actually smiling in it. It reminds me of the commercial on TV of the dogs with dentures.

And last week I did dog sit for a while. It was the one beautiful spring day we have had so far and Lily and I spent the afternoon throwing and fetching in the deep snow in my backyard. We both had fun!

ManU now entering the semi finals of the FA Cup (April 16) with a derby game. And now will be in the Quarter Finals in the Champions League (April 5-6 ; 12-13) as they won today against Marseille 2-1. Even though I enjoyed seeing one of my faves playing for Marseille - Gabriel Heinze, I was of course routing for my team. And they are currently sitting on top in the Premiership. Yeah ManU!!!

Naming the Twins

Sitting by the window today working on my computer, the sun streamed in enticing me outside. March, spring, blue skies, sunshine, ... I almost froze my cheeks off! Luckily, I was once again plugged into some good music. This time is was what I was listening to about a year ago during my trip to Nova Scotia. When Hilary and I went to the beautiful town of Shelburne, Nova Scotia, we were introduced to Robbie Smith & Kathleen Glauser's music. This brother and sister act called Naming the Twins recorded Sweet Transitions and it was this music and the memories of that spring trip that warmed me as I made my way through the bitter wind.
Here is a site where you can listen to the duo: http://radio3.cbc.ca/#/bands/Naming-the-Twins
You may have to sign in to access this site but I think you will find it well worthwhile. Lots of good music. Of this album I especially like Dry Land and Shake the Bandstand. Very east coast, very well done.

Last Day of February

Like Iris says, it is good to see February in the rear view mirror. Will Spring ever arrive? Went to pick up the mail today - the long way. Needed fresh air and sunshine. There was lots of both outside but also lots of wind. Luckily I layered as the windchill was driving the beautiful -18 temperature down to -34 ... like the weather office says "with a risk of frostbite". And this is why I take vitamin pills as not much of the sun is able to be absorbed on days like today.

Another Luckily, I had my earbuds inserted (sounds rude, doesn't it!?!) with James Morrison's voice floating around my head. That did much to make me forget the wind trying to nip that nose. Here is a sample of what I heard (and sorry once again, but you will have to "x" that annoying ad at the bottom):

Love his music!

Documentary

Thank you Facebook. I have been nosing through my "friends" walls and found this.

This trailer looks like it will be an interesting documentary. I remember the day well.
And that reminds me of the joke that went around that goes:
There really was a high jacking of a plane that landed in Whitehorse. The terrorist had a gun to the head of the pilot and he was heard yelling "I said White HOUSE"

Wayne Rooney

For those of you who missed it, (and for those of you that care !?!) here is Rooney bicycle kicking his brilliant goal of last weekend.

Here's what Sports & Stars said: "Rooney's kick in the 78th Minute of play put Manchester United ahead of Manchester City 2-1, which ended up being the final score.

United coach Alex Fergusson said the goal was "unbelievable," according to the UK Sun"

Rooney's back and with style!

Yukonic

Yukon Film & Sound Commission

My friend Iris works for the Yukon Film Commission (you'll remember her Heather!). She keeps me up to date on whaz hap'nin here in the north. Check out this trailer she just sent to me on Yukonic. CLICK HERE

Here is what she said about it:

This is the web series that I have been working on for the past year! Film Commission is the Executive Producer on this. There will be 13 two minutes webisodes that will be posted on the internet by end of the month! Oh and they will also be playing in Times Square.

Those of you who have been here will recognize bits of the Yukon from this trailer - Carcross Desert... White Pass & Yukon Route Passenger Car ... Can Can Dancers... And if you sign up you can be the first to watch the webisodes when they are released.

And for all you Facebook people, you can visit their wall at Yukon Film & Sound Commission.

Thanks for this Iris!

ughhhhh

Remember me bragging about our weather - sprinkling the sentences with words like "Hawaii"? Well, no more! Today is -22 degrees C and with the windchill will range from -44 to -34 degrees C. Ughhhhh. When will Spring come???

A Little HeadsUp

Listening to the radio yesterday I heard that Canada is moving from analog to digital TV in August of this year. The U.S.A. did this in June of 2009 (was it really that long ago??). We knew this was happening to our southern neighbours because EVERY U.S. TV station advertised this fact for months and months prior to it happening, explaining what the difference was and offering financial assistance for those needing a converter box due to this change over.

What does this mean? Not too much for most you living in southern Canada, but for us in the north, there are a lot of TV sets operating on antennas or on rabbit ears. In fact, I went to the store not too too long ago to pick up a NEW pair of rabbit ears and they were ALL SOLD OUT. Where else in Canada (except perhaps in NWT or Nunavut) would that happen? In fact, I'll bet some of you reading this won't even know (remember?) what rabbit ears are! They are the small anntenas that attach to the top of your TV set and consist of two extensible rods shaped in a "V". They pick up analog TV stations - in my case I receive CBC TV English, CBC TV French and APTN. But I digress. So I googled this change in Canada and here is what the CRTC said:

"Canadian local over-the-air television stations moving to digital: August 31, 2011

By August 31, 2011, Canadian local television stations in certain areas will stop broadcasting in analog and will start broadcasting in digital.

The majority of Canadians will not be affected. If you receive your TV signals by cable, satellite or another TV service, the switch to digital will not affect you. You will continue to receive your existing television services with the equipment that you currently use. You will not be required to buy a new TV or other equipment, or subscribe to additional services.

The switch to digital may affect television viewers who receive local over-the-air TV stations using an outdoor antenna or “rabbit ears”. Once the switch occurs, these viewers may need to have either a digital converter box or a television with a digital tuner, or may want to consider receiving their TV services from a cable, satellite or other service provider.

Areas switching to digital signals on August 31, 2011

Local over-the-air television stations that fit the following criteria will be required to make the switch on August 31, 2011:

  • national, provincial and territorial capital cities
  • areas with a population over 300,000
  • other areas where there is more than one local television station broadcasting over-the-air signals"

What do they mean by "may"? It should read "will either"..."or". You will not be able to pick up digital signals on an antenna.

So that means my little 14" Sharp TV I received as a gift in 1989 will not longer work unless I get a converter box AND get cable TV. Boo hoo. I loved that little TV.

Hockey Day in Canada - tomorrow

Officially tomorrow is Hockey Day in Canada, but all of the "stars" are here now. Do you recognize the above person? Luckily all the hockey players that take part in this Day are "old" hockey players, so I recognize their names from days of yore, when I was interested in hockey - that is before all the fighting and before the zillion US teams joined the NHL - I mean, who even knows how to ice skate in Florida or Arizona, or California!?! (If you give up, it is Ken Dryden)

There was a skate this morning with the Stanley Cup on location at the Canada Games Centre. The CBC morning show was broadcast live on location. I thought I would see if I could see the Cup after 9 AM - when all the people had left for work or school. Of course, all the people left and so did the cup but the Puck was still there so I took advantage of that!
I know that some of the hockey people were coaching sessions in the morning, but it was difficult to tell who was who with all their equipment on. I heard Wendell Clark and Lanny McDonald were there, but didn't see them, so all you get is a photo of a puck.

I tell the truth

In case you didn't believe me when I said Shaun was in a bit of a state in 1984, here is a photo to prove it!
