A Lovely Walk

A lesson for the southerners who are experiencing cold cold weather - dress for it.  It was only -27C today but with the wind chill it was much colder (as I learned from yesterday's walk) -40C  So today I donned my scarf to protect my face and it did the job just fine.  We also walked in the shelter of the trees today which cut down the wind considerably.  Consequently, a lovely walk.

New Friend

Now that Brooke has been to a La Liga game, she has discovered Rinaldo.  Not only did he score a Hat Trick (3 goals in the game) but he is cute (and rich) to boot.

Real Madrid v Getafe

Memories for SR & Brooke. For all others, highlights of the Madrid Real v Getafe game they went to see in Madrid. See if you can spot them in the crowds (2nd tier). If you can, let me know.

January

Although the temperature is not too too bad (-18C) that North Wind is something else.  Went for a walk this morning and for the first half hour thought the weather was pretty good, till I turned around to return home ... had the north wind in my face the whole way.  Had to look to ensure my cheeks were not frost bitten.

So did some downtown things.  Threw (not really ... ) Lily in the back of the car and away we went.

That wind just kept on a-blowin' .  When I was in grade 6, I had a teacher who would make us memorize poetry each week.  I was sure one of the poems was "...It is a cold wind, the north wind ..."  It sounds like it should be a Henry Wadsworth Longfellow poem or Walter de la Mare or similar, but I couldn't find it on google.  If you know of it please let me know.

News from Spain ... Brooke and SR are going to see a La Liga game tomorrow (noon in Spain, 6AM Eastern time)  Should be so much fun.  The stadium holds something like 70,000 and they had trouble getting 2 seats together so sounds like it's full - Madrid v Getafe.  Am trying to find a way to watch it on TV without much success.

They'rrrrrrrrree Baaaaaaack

I know you must get tired of seeing photos of these birds, but they never cease to amaze me.  They came late this year and usually they strip the trees of their berries in about five minutes.  This year they left the trees laden with berries which froze and pulled the branches down low.  I was surprised, but of course, there was a reason.  They're back and still have plenty of berries to eat.  Nature is amazing.

January 18

We have just gone through unusually warm weather - was up to 6 C ABOVE Zero.  We did get a rather large snowfall yesterday but all in all, very pleasant weather.  Lily is currently on a plane coming north to stay at my place.  Am looking forward to seeing her.  Now, for the weather.  Starting tomorrow with the windchill it is expected to drop to -30 C.  Well, what else would I expect.  That is what 2013 is giving me - constant kicks in the shins.  One day it will change ... won't it?

The Honeymoon

The pre-wedding honeymoon looks to be going well.  I stole this photo from SR's Facebook page.  It looks like at least he is finding sun and relaxation and beautiful scenery.  I hope Brooke is finding the same.

Arctic Drive to the Coldest Town on Earth - Jay Leno's Garage

Back Again

Been a while since I was last here.  Where did I leave you last?  Christmas.  Yes, spent a few weeks in southern Ontario to experience snowfalls, something they haven't had for years.  I was ill the whole time I was away - nasty cold - as was almost everyone else.  SR & Brooke came east prior to their pre-marriage honeymoon.  Was fun to see everyone together.  The first weekend there I spent in Kettleby baking Christmas cookies with Kate.

We made shortbread with sprinkles, meringue snowmen with eyes and rice krispie squares with more sprinkles.  The cookies were a big hit and disappeared quickly.

We had our annual movie afternoon - one theatre, many many movies to choose from, small groups going in many different directions.  My group saw Les Miserables - one fine movie.  I'll be watching to see how many Academy Awards it walks away with.

We watched David play hockey.  SR won the 50/50 draw and Scott won the ticket number prize.  Some of us were lucky that night - as well as David as his team won.

We celebrated Kate's 7th Birthday.  I called the gang together for a photo (below).   John groomed the sledding hill and many of us donned our snow pants and flew down the hill before the sun set.

Brooke did well - only knowing two of all those people pictured below.  Everyone was excited to meet her and greet her into our family.  Considering both she and SR had colds (who didn't??) they both did very well socializing.

We had a few good games of Logo, lots of great dinners and even a little shopping.  It was fun having everyone all together.

Spent New Year's Eve watching Weekend at Bernies and toasting at midnight.  Then a few days later was on a plane to the north once again.

So HAPPY NEW YEAR to all my readers - wishing you all Health and Happiness in 2013!
