Last Sunday of August

I'm bundled up on the couch with a box of kleenex and sneezing away with what should be called a summer cold, but according to the temperatures these last few days is more like an early winter cold.  As you can see the temperature is pushing towards 5 degrees and that was at 2:00 in the afternoon.  High for the next three days is 7 Celsius.  Apparently beginning Thursday it should go into double digits once again, but we'll see.  The rain and the wind do not make it any more pleasant.

And there is a mountain above those roofs.  I haven't seen it for three days.  Notice the lovely colour on the trees.  Yes, fall came very early this year.

OH NO ... more baby pictures!!!!!

Since it's a high of 7 today and raining I decided to post a few pictures.  I was advised that it is OK to be a proud Meemaw so here goes.

Guess who's walking????  I just knew she would be the first to walk.  She has wanted to be upright for at least a month now.

And it won't be long before he joins her.  He almost walked to me on Wednesday but thought better of it at the last moment.  He is inquisitive.  He always has his eye on something (he can't have).

And sometimes, he is just a little angel.

Smoothie time, just before a nap.

And you can see who needs a nap sooner than later.  Here he is waiting for his smoothie to come, which apparently is not coming soon enough.  Reminds me of the new word just entering the dictionary today: Hangry:  a blend of hungry and angry, meaning bad-tempered or irritable as a result of hunger.

My Weekend Friends

I have two friends staying with me this weekend.  Today it rained and rained and still we went out for a walk.  (It could have been a bit warmer - I could  certainly feel winter in the air).

The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Remember the thrill of watching two good looking, extremely talented, suave young men save the world from evil.  Well, you can do it once again.

If you ever wondered how a Russian secret agent (Ilia Kuryakyn) and American secret agent (Napoleon Solo) ever combined to make one dynamite pair, come see this movie.  The period is mid 1960's and the whole movie stays true to the original series in every way.  There is a soft plot spiced with humour and from beginning to end the movie is thoroughly entertaining, well acted and extremely well constructed from period costumes to music.  I give it 5 stars.

Wee-Ones Wednesday

You are going to tire of Wee-ones Wednesday.  We found our favourite book Puppy Love, featuring Rollo and Bill, Ben and Bob.  Their fur is so soft, their ribbons very red and their tongues rough.  The book is even good up-side-down.

We had fun this morning.  We chased (I chased), we tickled, we made dog, bear and clock noises, found our noses, ears and eyes,  and we ate breakfast then a smoothie.  All in all, a good morning.

And STILL Saturday

Then it was off to Dawn's house for food, drinks and a soak in the hot tub.  This was an addition to our Academy Awards swag bag and the weather cooperated excellently (is that a word?).  It began
with martini's for those that wished, or wine or water for those that didn't wish.  Then the grand variety of appies - which I didn't take a photo of and now can kick myself, as Dawn outdid herself.  Also, I was busy stuffing myself, so didn't really have a minute to set aside for photos!  All beverages and any necessity was catered to by John the Butler.  He did an excellent job I must say!

After the food (which ended with an Amaretto cheese cake!!!!!!) it was into the hot tub for a soak.

Our butler served us drinks while we soaked.  Couldn't ask for more.

Thanks Dawn.  It was a wonderful afternoon with friends and food, two of my favourite things.

Saturday, Still

Then it was across the road to meet my friends for a stroll around the Millenium Trail.

I met Mrs Church and stopped to chat at one point where I fell behind, but don't worry, I caught up.

A view of the dam from the Bridge on the trail.

The eagles have made a new nest across the road on the South Access.  I have looked and looked and could never find it.  Luckily I was with Dawn, who patiently pointed out the correct tree that houses their new nest.  And ...  an eaglet was perched on the nest as well, so now I know where to look and one day will try to walk on the bluff to get a view from above.

And a view of the SS Klondike from the trail.

Lisa this is the trail I wanted to walk around with you and your family after we toured the SS Klondike.  Unfortunately, the skies opened up at that time and the water poured down, so we went to a restaurant (with the largest menu in the world) instead.

Sunny Saturday

Hot, sunny, yeah.  This is what we've been waiting for.  Met the crew down at Rotary Park to play in the water park this afternoon.  (No photos in the water park as I had one wee one and was concentrating on babies, and dodging cold water that was squirting in all directions)  We had fun and the kids loved watching the older kids play in the water.

Then it was time to dry off in the sun and have a snack.  As soon as you said "eat" that is all those two little ones could think about.  No more smiles, only a desire for immediate feeding.  (I think Brooke will be mad at me for including this photo, but it makes me smile).

On the blanket with an offering of food, they were happy once again.  Look at that beautiful sky!

It's Summer - Finally

The day started out clear and sunny - as usual.  Once again I phoned a friend for a walk.  Yes, I am an optimist.  I donned my long pants, sox, and light jacket and off I went.

The weather not only held during our walk, but improved!  In fact it became so hot I had to take off my jacket and pull up my long pants.

I don't know what these are suppose to be - perhaps art?? - but during our rest period in shipyards park I took photos not so much of our surroundings but of the sky - BLUE and NO RAIN.

The river was beautiful today.  The water is so clean it reminded me of the water of Greece.

After the walk I went over to check up on the twins who were ill today.  They were sleeping when I arrived so I chatted a bit with Brooke, then departed.  Hopefully they did sleep for a few hours and their health improves.  I will check on them again tomorrow, the little dears.

August 13

Was a beautiful morning (as usual).  My friend & I had planned a walk just before noon.  So we met downtown by the train station and walked along the river and caught up on each other's lives.

Shelley had recently returned from Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam etc,, where she seems to be wintering these days.  And although it looked nice and warm and although it was not even mid August, it was cold - about 12 degrees.  Yuk for that, otherwise a great afternoon walking and catching up.

And while I was walking downtown along the river, apparently bears were walking in my neighbourhood.  The following is from this afternoon's Whitehorse Star:

Caution urged as grizzly bears visit residential area

Environment Yukon conservation officers were using trained dogs this morning and early this afternoon to guide a family of grizzly bears away from Hamilton Boulevard.

Environment Yukon conservation officers were using trained dogs this morning and early this afternoon to guide a family of grizzly bears away from Hamilton Boulevard.
A grizzly sow and cubs were spotted at about 9:15 a.m. near Bigway Foods, located between the Granger and Copper Ridge neighbourhoods.
Through its Twitter account, the department was updating residents on the whereabouts of the grizzlies in Whitehorse.  (Looks like I must reactivate my Twitter account)
“They have responded to the dogs and (conservation officers) continue to try and move them,” the tweet read.
As of noon today, the bears were in an area behind North Star Drive, near a gully, said Kris Gustafson, the government’s director of conservation officer services.
“These bears have been shepherded before,” Gustafson said. “They responded well to human voices.”
The Karelian Bear Dogs the officers are using to steer the bear family away from the residential area had previously been in Carcross.  (Yes, Lisa et al, these were the bears we saw on the way home from Skagway)
In that community, their corralling skills were tested in the Choutla subdivision where two bear families had been repeatedly feeding on soapberries.
It is an anomaly, Gustafson said, that the B.C. and Alberta contractors with the dogs were in town to help out today.
“They’re getting put to use one more time,” Environment spokesperson Eric Clement said this morning.
As part of the department’s “aversive conditioning” program, the officers were attempting to discourage two bear families from staying in the Carcross neighbourhood.
Aversive conditioning involves the use of something unpleasant– bear-bangers, lights, trained dogs and/or rubber bullets and paintballs – to stop unwanted behaviour.

Mission: Impossible, Rogue Nation

Just viewed this film last night.  If you want an action packed movies with good guys and bad guys and a motorcycle/car chase and an unbelievable plot (and I mean a plot that is "impossible" to believe, but is predictable) then this is the movie for you.  It was entertaining, funny as it was so unreal and falls in line with the previous Mission: Impossibles.  Very enjoyable.  I give it 4 Stars out of 5.

Construction Kate

While here, Kate spent the afternoon with the twins and Rachel and apparently Brooke, as I just received these pictures which Brooke took.  Here she is by some Rock Trucks.

Love the photos.  Thanks Brooke.

Just Remembering

Just sorting through my "Lisa's Visit" photos and decided to add a few last ones of their trip.  Above, our lazy mornings while John was out swimming laps at the pool.

Proof Lisa could walk in the woods and NOT get eaten by a bear.

Kate & I by a local Woolly Mammoth.

Proof of the nicest washrooms in town.

And Kate & I on the suspension bridge at Miles Canyon.

Saturday

My times with the twins was short.  They were dressed to go to a wedding and when on the ground they go like lightning.  Notice the tie on Emerson?  And difficult to see but Alanna was a princess in a beautiful flowered dress.  She prefers walking to crawling.
