Rock Collecting

On my way back to the highway I stopped at a small turn-out (to pick up another rock).  It was on the Fish Lake Road around the final descent.  I followed a trail to see where it lead and behold, a whole new vista opened up for me.  Funny how I had travelled that road every day for 10 years and never stopped to find this trail.

The yellow wild flowers were brilliant agains the green of the mountain side.

But, watch your step.  This is the root of a tree clinging to a rocky outpost.  Had I tripped on that, it would have been the first and last time I would have feasted my eyes on this beautiful scene.

Last Days of August

Yesterday it rained all day.  Perfect for me as I was fertilizing my lawn and digging up a garden and planting some perennials.  On my way to visit Gramma (and visiting Dianna) this morning I could see that it is that time of year - the rain is white now on the mountain tops.

While rock collecting - did I say I am making a wee rock garden area?? - I took a few more photos of the surrounding mountains.  I must say the day turned out beautifully and tomorrow we are suppose to reach 21 degrees!!  Yea, considering it is golf night tomorrow!

A Whale of a Time

This photo is from Lara's Facebook page.  This is her Father's boat, with Walter, her father, in it!!!  Don't know where is was taken though I'd bet just a bit north or south of Skagway Alaska.  Such a great photo of my old next door neighbour.

Bean North

I had promised my friend Helen that we would have coffee one morning this week at Bean North, the coffee roasters on the Takhini Hotsprings Road...always a lovely place to sit and sip their wonderful, freshly roasted, fair trade coffee.  Before I knew it, it was Friday - where did the week go?   As luck would have it the morning was sunny with a predicted high of 18, so after a quick phone call we were off up the highway to have our coffee.

It was even warm enough to sip our brew outside.  That is Helen in the blue sweater.  We then toured their gardens.  Although many of the blooms were past their prime, it was good timing to collect some of the seeds from the plants we liked the most.

Inside you can look through a large window to see their coffee roasting operation.  And to top it off, the people that served us (the owners???) we especially pleasant and cheerful.  Just the kind of place of enjoy a perfect cup of java.

The Culture High

I just discovered www.kickstarter.com and was scrolling through the projects that people are trying to get funding for when SR arrived. Of course he knew of the site and not only knew of it but showed me his friend's request on this site. He and his crew made a follow-up documentary to The Union: The Business Behind Getting High. As stated on Kickstarter, "Simply put, we want to get the film out to as many people as possible. It is a film with a universal message, but Hollywood is telling us the audience doesn't want this kind of film on the big screen or a mainstream release, this is OUR chance to prove them WRONG!", thus the reason for their search for funding. Below is the video explaining their need for assistance. P.S.: I should clarify that the request ended August 3rd. Their goal was $190,000 and they received $240,022. They were successful. So now you can keep an eye open to viewing this documentary.

P M in the north

Was at the airport today and saw Prime Minister Harper's plane parked beside the runway, but don't know where the PM is.  Good day to visit the capital of the Yukon.  No one is in Whitehorse today as it is the Discovery Day Holiday - and everyone ... I mean everyone (except me) is out of town enjoying the last long weekend of the summer.  Although I did see our Premier lunching in the Klondike Rib and Salmon.  Hope he remembered the PM's visit although he was still chowing down when I left.

Yarn Bombing the DC-3

On Saturday, months of planning came together when members of Yarn Bomb Yukon “yarn bombed” the 70-year-old DC-3 airplane that rests outside the Yukon Transportation museum.
“We had knitters from across North America sending in granny squares,” McMaster fine arts graduate Jessica Vellenga told CBC Hamilton - (where was Kristin??)
The form fitting tea cosy that's now hugging the aircraft spans close to 2,500 square feet and was draped over the plane over the course of five hours.

I guess they had some afghans left over as they also yarn bombed this truck that was parked in front of the museum.  It will apparently be left on display like this for 7 days before the plane is disrobed.

Yarn bombing is a kind of guerilla street art in the same vein as graffiti — an international art and activism movement.
Artists take their knitting and cover pieces of public property in the name of art — though unlike graffiti, it is fairly easily removed. In fact, the pieces of the tea cosy covering the DC-3 are to be cleaned and given to the needy as blankets when pried off the aircraft.
(from CBC News)

I'm sure this is not big news for you, but for me it is.  I now have a shed which means that I am not pulling shovels and other tools out of the garage when I back my car out.  As said previously, a single garage is made for a single car and not meant to store all those other things we home owners have.  So years after moving in and often looking with envy at my neighbours' sheds, I am now the proud owner of one myself.  So so happy.

Ahhh Summer

Some days just turn out perfect.  Watched a  little Olympic Soccer this morning.  Then coffee on the deck with a good book.  Golf in the afternoon in the sunshine and warm weather and a refreshing beer afterwards at E's house.  The columbine were blooming as were all the flowers.  It was peaceful and beautiful.  Then on the ride home the rain started.  Just a lovely day all in all.

Saturday Morning

Awoke this morning, drew the curtains and this is what I saw !  I have been living here for 30 some odd years and have never seen fog sitting on the land like this.  Times they are a-changing.

It is still morning and no fog now.  Perhaps that was a dream.

My shed-men are coming this morning.  After this weekend, I will have a new shed in my backyard - and will be able to move in my garage.  A single car garage IS a single car garage - one car and that is all.  I can't wait!
