Farewell
It is always a sad time when friends decide to leave the Yukon. This is the case for dear Richard and Brenda, so Terry had the gang over for the last supper. Driving to Lake Laberge was exciting. We drove through sun (sunglasses on), huge dark threatening clouds (sunglasses off), rain (now my clean car is once again dirty!!!!) and hail (luckily not the size of golf balls but did cover the highway in white and bounce merrily off my windshield). There is still lots of ice on the lake and the creek, as you can see from behind Roger, Terry and Iris above, is way way down (not currently Deep Creek) - we think the snow has not yet melted off the mountains yet.
So both Richard and Brenda are retiring and heading down to little Britain - Victoria, B.C. I'll bet they'll miss the long winters and -40 degree temperatures! Even Terry is making plans to head to the island. Soon I'll know more people on the island than in the Yukon!
But we hardy ones will stick it out for a bit longer and only think of the positive - long summer days with lots and lots of time for eating, drinking and hanging with friends.

May 16
I know we have been very slow in reaching double digits temperature wise (still haven't unless you stand directly in the sunshine) but even my flamingos are heading south. There was 6 heavy thick inches on the ground when I awoke and an hour later, it is still snowing. They keep talking about the weekend forecast of warmth and no snow. I hope they are accurate, but then again, it is a weatherman forecasting that.
How is Robin Redbreast going to find the grubs in the lawn?

At the Movies
Two movies I have recently seen. First, The Avengers. I am not really a Marvel Comic Super Hero type of person. Now, having said that, I LOVE Iron Man. Of course Robert Downey Jr IS Iron Man ... need I say more? But I have not really followed Captain America or Thor and didn't even know who the Black Widow was. The Hulk I remember from the TV show of the same name and is was fun to watch this ordinary man get mad and grow huge and green (although I may have had only a black and white TV at that stage). But, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. There was action, humour and of course a plot that saves the world. They all played their roles very well.
Dark Shadows - who better to play a Tim Burton Vampire than Johnny Depp? The stars weren't shining on this movie - reviewers showed anywhere from one to three stars but this reviewer gives it five stars. It's a Vampire, witch, werewolf movie folks. Let's not take it too seriously. And the humour was often, though not always, imbedded within the movie if you watched closely. I enjoyed it. I just could not understand why someone took their six year old to watch the film. Not for children but very entertaining for us adults.

Mom's Day
It's great being a Mother. I had the Dinner I wanted, cooked by NOT Me; I was given presents, flowers - Crocus's picked just for me- the first flowers of spring and the first I have seen this year and served fine wine! And I got to spend the evening with my favourite people. What mom could ask for more.
For Kate
Kate,
Of all the cards I received,
look whose card is the WIDEST, TALLEST, SHINIEST and overall BIGGEST!!!
Thank you.

New Champions
It is with a sad heart that I post the photo of the winning team. With 1-1/2 minutes to go, Manchester City scored the goal that won them the cup. Until that time, Manchester United were on top of the table. Both teams ended on the top of the table with 89 points but Manchester City won on goal difference. It was a nail biting ending for the English Premier League.
Congrats to the Blue team! (Man U will get it back next year.)
Only one more big game to go this season (not counting the Olympics) - The UEFA Champions League in which Bayern Munich and Chelsea will vie for the title next Saturday.
It's Starting Again
This article was in the CBC news May 12th:
Yukon conservation officers have received reports of black bear sightings in the Granger area of Whitehorse.
Senior conservation officer Kris Gustafson said he doesn't know if it's one bear or multiple bears, but they seem to be attracted to garbage bins around Wilson Drive and Hayes Crescent.
Gustafson said conservation officers are keeping an eye on the area. He's hopeful the bear will leave on its own, but is asking for the public's help.
“We’re hoping that we’re going to get some co-operation from the public in terms of minimizing the attractant,” he said.
“There's lots of natural bear foods in that area the bear can easily access. But if there's a bag of protein available to it, it's going to try to access those as well. So the simple solution here is to try to minimize the availability of those things and the bear will seek other natural food sources elsewhere.”
Gustafson says garbage bins should be put in a garage or shed, if possible, or people can also use heavy-duty bungee cords to secure lids on garbage cans.
Conservation officers relocated a black bear near the Alaska Highway in the Takhini area, earlier this week. It was also trying to get at garbage.
Conservation officers shot a black bear in my area late last fall. I thought the problem was solved, but apparently there are more than one in my neighbourhood. One difficulty is the compost program the City has. They have given us HUGE green bins to deposit our compost. The bins are too big for my garage and I do not have a shed. I doubt the garbage man will appreciate having to get out of his truck to unhook a bungie cord before emptying each bin.
Happy Mother's Day
To all you Moms out there,
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY! ! !
And I cannot seem to imbed this, but it is Google's Mother's Day Doodle. Worth a watch and so cute.

A day on the links
It may be 6 degrees celcius with gale force winds that freeze your forehead; the grass may still be brown and patchy and we may still have temporary greens; and I may have shot my ball into the only snow patch on the fairway, but we golfed today. First game of the season. Now looking forward to warmer weather and many more games!

New Map of Canada
I have removed the map due to the comment below:
Hi there -- please can you remove my copyrighted material from your blog?
http://yukrac.blogspot.ca/
This map of Canada was created by me. Whoever added the extra text to it just covered my name and added their own text. This is something that I created and I'd prefer not to have another version out there without my copyright on it.
Thanks for your help.

There you go Kirstin, removed. Sorry, I didn't realize it was copyright but enjoyed it none-the-less.

Movie Night
Here is one of my friends that went to movie night with me. Ella was quite excited to see The Pirates as she has a pirate costume and had an eye patch that Amma made.
Luckily we were going to see The Pirates as The Avengers was sold out by the time we arrived at the theatre - one I will go to early next week. In the same theme as Chicken Run, the animation of The Pirates was very good, the story simple and easy to follow with adult digs dispersed throughout and ended happily ever after. Hugh Grant was a very good Pirate voice. I chuckled throughout and found 1-1/2 hours quite long enough. All in all, a very enjoyable movie.

New Jersey Mother Accused of Letting Daughter, 5, Use Tanning Bed - ABC News
I saw this on Jimmy Kimmel tonight and couldn't believe the mother had actually tanned to this extent. The news report below shows she did! Not to mention letting her daughter near such a bed!

A Bird
If anyone knows what kind of a bird this is, please let me know. I do think it is the one that sings a most irritating song. Below, the arrow is pointing to where the bird (above) is sitting in my yard, so you can see it is just a wee thing. And yes, the photo was taken yesterday and I do still have some snow in my front yard.
